In our Planet Under Pressure series we’ve looked at some of the world’s biggest environmental problems.
But the first steps toward solving these issues can begin at home – which is why we asked you to send us your designs for an eco-friendly garden.
We asked you to design a garden which is a relaxing green space for you, your family and friends, uses natural resources in a sustainable way and encourages a wide range of plants and wildlife.
The winner was Gina Couch, from the UK. Her entry was chosen by a team of experts from the BBC Gardening website, and she wins a copy of the Henry Doubleday Research Foundation’s Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening.
You can see Gina’s winning entry below, as well as some of the best other designs we received.

Federal officials are urging consumers to put off eating foods that contain peanut butter until assurances are made that the foods do not contain products manufactured by the Peanut Corp. of America, some of which were found to contain salmonella.
Food and Drug Administration officials said Saturday that peanut butter and peanut paste made from ground roasted peanuts, manufactured in Peanut Corp.’s Blakely, Georgia, plant were found to contain the bacteria, although a direct link to the strain that has now sickened 474 people in 43 states has not been found.
Six deaths may have been connected to this salmonella outbreak.
Peanut Corp. announced an expanded recall of peanut butter and peanut paste produced from its Georgia plant Friday night.

European manufacturers have been slow to adopt hybrid-electric technology—in part because half the new cars sold there are diesels, which use less fuel to start with. Now Mercedes-Benz has launched its first production hybrid.
It’s a simple “mild hybrid” that restarts the engine after it’s switched off when stopped, as well as adding some degree of electric boost. But the new car comes with a kicker: The Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid is the very first production hybrid in the world with a battery that uses lithium ion cells, rather than the less energy-dense nickel-metal-hydride found in every other hybrid thus far.

It’s a relatively rare development in the magazine world these days: the launch of a new title. That’s especially true when the debut is in the “green” lifestyle category, which has not fared too well in recent years. But Sovereign/Homestead is standing confidently by its new bimonthly title, Organic Beauty. Publisher Diane Hintz said the publication fills an unmet need in the magazine industry, appealing to affluent and educated women seeking eco-friendly beauty products.
“This is basically a market without a voice,” Ms. Hintz said, citing her own past experience trying to find information about natural and organic beauty products. “You could pick up bits and pieces of info on various websites and magazines, but no one put it all together.”
